Camp or Clinic

At the end of the season the basketball community starts looking for basketball camps. This is a touchy subject so I know I might upset a few people. The words "Basketball" and "Camp" are used so loosely now that the meaning has changed and lost its value. You have "Team Camps", "Big Man Camps", "University of this Camp".  More often than not you very little skills are being taught and MORE games are being played. I am an advocate of this when a player NEEDS more games to build self-confidence.

My focus is on practice..."We talking about Practice.  Did we forget the time, sweat, blood, and years that it might take to truly master something.  This is why I am not a big advocate of games.  Why is that?.  You practice how you play and you play how you practice. Some players skip team practice and are allowed to play on Game Day.  Are you serious?  Yes it happens because mommy and daddy donate thousands of dollars to the school.  Then you have some players/parents who run over to the score book to see how many points little Johnny just had.  REALLY!  "We just lost the game and you are worried about how many points you had".  It makes me sick to my stomach , who cares about the quality of the game anymore?

The facts show us that some camps turn out to babysitting events.  It's a free for all with guys playing dodge-ball with a basketball and knock-out.  And there is too much down time, so there has to be a better way. I don't know maybe Tommy did learn something from that camp. When I hear people say "Team Camp", I know there son/daughter just played a bunch of games.  Again, don't get me wrong "GAME CAMPS" are good for the athlete who needs to build their self-confidence and self-esteem. What happens when a not-so-super-star player is missing the fundamental grass-root skills needed to play the game. Playing more game and making the same mistakes over and over without feedback.  Is this really the answer?  Is this really going to help.

A clinic  is hands down the best solution for someone searching for skill development. The clinic will consist of skill development work and very little games.  A players time is managed down to the second as they rotate through the stations. Players ask questions, take notes and take home several new tangible drills this summer at the basketball clinic .

Ask questions about the camp before you sign up.  Look for the Camp Itinerary. If film time is longer than skill time, run away, lol .  Take notes, you now have all summer long to practice the new skills you learned.
