Practice...We talking about Practice, Right!

This legendary Allen Iverson's press conference can teach us a lot.  I love Allen Iverson's fearless attitude, heart, and passion for the game but "We talking about Practice". Iverson was able to change the basketball world not only with his "Killer Crossover" but also with his words.

Today's athlete does not "Practice".  Once the last ball is placed in the rack they are gone.  Did you see that kids forty time? Zoom..Zoom.. Most players sprint home so they can get online.  With Call of Duty in stores, what do you think they are doing?  Think about this for a minute.  Why would you work hard in the off-season only to stop working on your game once the season rolls around?  I don't understand that thought process.

During your school practice did you get enough repetitions shooting, passing, and dribble. "No, we just worked on our offensive sets". What about conditioning? Well we did some 3 on 2,2 on 1. What about free throws the mother of all basketball shots?  "We shot a few of those". Great, so basically you had some conditioning and free throws, but no time work on your personal game.  This is why you ran home to play video games..?

"Practice" is preparation for the game. That is why we are talking about it! Alan Stein said it best at a Nike 5 Star Coaching Clinic " Are you Prepared for the Game" or " Are you waiting for the Game ".  Wow, that sums it up! Most players are just waiting for the game.  Invest your own time during the week to work on basketball skill sets, that is being prepared.  On the other hand once you stop working and pick up the video game, you waiting for the basketball game.

Pistol Pete Maravich worked out 8 hours a day in the off-season, and 4 hours per day during the season.  Maravich still holds many of his NCAA records.

BackCourt Takeaways
It's pointless to work on your game in the off-season, IF you are not going to work on it during the season. Work on your game during the season, have a specific plan before you start your workout.
