Brick, Air Ball, and a free throw percentage low enough that it makes SHAQ look like a hero. What can a young ball player do to prevent this from happening? One of the most important aspects that a ball player can work on is their shooting. "Coach that takes time away from me playing PS3/Xbox, and it’s hard to work on my shooting."
Four years ago, I was talking to Rob Hackett, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for a NBA Team. This is how the conversation ended. "Coach Hackett! Thank you for your time, and "Have a GOOD WEEKEND". Coach Hackett said "What are you talking about". During the off season it just all runs together, we workout seven days a week. Wow! Think about that statement for a minute or two. The elite professional basketball players work hard in-season and during the offseason to keep their job.
How bad do you want to it?
The argument is that young players should improve their game today because of technology advancements. Hold on, these young players still need to have a burning desire to improve. They say "You can teach Height but you can't teach Heart & Desire".
10,000 ShotsSeveral years ago; more like twelve years ago my dad made a suggestion to me about improving my shooting. My father thought I should shoot the basketball until the cows came home. That didn't seem realistic to me so I decided to get onto RM's website and ask him the QUESTION.
"RM how many shots do you shoot during the summer". RM comes back with a round number like 10,000. WHAT? Ten thousand shots are you crazy! Is RM wrong, or is he correct? It all depends on your personal goal. Do you want to be the best shooter on your team? Maybe you want to be the best shooter in your town. It all depends on you!
I agree with RM; however we are going to make one change and give you a game plan. If you want to perfect the art of shooting, you need to log in 10,000 MADE shots. Shooting the basketball is all about shooting form, muscle memory, repetition and touch. The more shots you take at game speeds from game spots the better shooter you will become. Another idea is to find a personal coach in your area to help you with your shooting.
Game Plan The plan is simple; you have to break you goal down into parts so you can be successful. The commitment is to shoot 111 shots per day for 30 days during a three month period. June, July, and August all have at least 30 days, which yells out opportunity for you.
What, you are crazy! What do you mean give up my summer to become a better basketball player. I need to go to the Florida Keys this summer, Disney World, and watch that new save the world movie by Will Smith. "Coach, I don't care if one of the greatest shooters in NBA history emailed you back."
My advice is to make 111 shots each day this summer. Keep a log book or spreadsheet, and call it "Shooting for the Stars". Make fifty-five shots in the morning and make fifty-five more at night. Once you finish never leave the court until you make three shots in a row.
Why don't you get on make the Dream Team in your area and win a basketball tournament at Disneyworld in Orlando.
What about the brilliant idea of saving your parents money by earning an athlete scholarship. It's all in your hands and I believe you can make it happen by shooting 111 plus shots per day for three months this summer.
Shooting Tools
Back in the day when dinosaurs ruled the earth basketball players had to get their own rebounds after each shot. If you were fortunate to have a bother in law who would wake up at 5:00 am just to grab rebounds for you.
Players today have a better chance to get better because all of the technology specific tools. For example, if you need a tool to keep your guide arm in place. I would suggest looking into the "Star Shooter", by Jay Wolf. Coach Wolf is a very good resource to contact and is recognized as a shot doctor who fixes shooting aliments.
If you don't have someone to grab rebounds for you, I would suggest looking into the "Dr. Dish", or "The Gun". Both are good products, but you will find that they are different. The value found in the "Dr. Dish", and "The Gun" is that they both, allow a basketball player to take many shots in a short time, force a high arching shot, and rebound the ball for you in most cases.
Now you have in your tool box the ability to location of the perfect game in your town. Remember there is someone out there working on their shooting. What is going to happen when you meet up?
Good luck! Keep me posted on your progress!
What else you can do during the summer to work on your shooting?
