Basketball Parents! How to Get a Free Basketball Player Evaluation.

You probably know that basketball is very competitive.

A parent contacted, let's call her Lori. Lori told me about her 6’1 son who has played basketball for the last 3 years in the post out of necessity. Over the years he development a great low post game vs smaller players.

However he was heading into his senior year without guard skills. This parent was looking to find Basketball Training www.bcbacademy.com  to work on scoring, ball-handling, and separation moves for her son.

I was a little surprised by this conversation, but I just figured that he was the biggest kid on the team.

Lori wanted to hear about our private and group training lessons at Back Court Basketball Academy. She seemed excited and fascinated that we could help her son with his basketball skills.

I told her that we have a revolutionary free evaluation process that provides feedback about a player within minutes of a working. After the evaluation complete I will provide you with specific skill sets that can be improved upon.

"Do you provide youth basketball drills to take home she asked?"

"I sure do provide youth basketball drills to take home. Just imagine your son practicing basketball shooting drills in your driveway on your basketball goal."

Lori sensed that this was a historic opportunity to teach her son how to play basketball.

I asked for all of her contact information to create a player profile. After that we scheduled a free player evaluation for her son.

After working with Lori's for 8 one hour sessions and several BCB basketball camps we clearly noticed a difference in his game. Lori's son was able to score consistently, dribble better, create his own shot, move without the ball. He was on his way to becoming a complete basketball player.

Lori's son went on to be a stand out on his AAU basketball team last summer.

Wouldn't it be amazing if I could help your basketball player earn more playing time.

See you in the Back Court!

P.S. While I was on the phone with Lori, her son was watching our basketball videos on Youtube. Lol…

Do you teach complete basketball players or just position players?

Do you teach complete players or just positions?

Is it wise, thoughtful, or productive to prevent a youth basketball player from learning a specific skill set?  For example, only having guard’s practice or big man’s practice.

At the younger levels the kids that can handle the ball take most of the shots. Let me tell you a story. A parent contacted me about her  6’1 & 6’2 guard who has played in the post out of necessity with no guard skills (ball-handling, separation moves).
What was he doing the last 4 years?

If he 6'2 is good enough to play college ball how is he going to be successful in the POST when his competition is  6’7 and 6’8?

Basically he has been playing out of position for 4 years. I believe this is a crime to our kids and that we should not prevent them from learning all skill sets.  I teach my BIGS ball handling and my Guards drop steps & hook shots.

High School Basketball and More

School Basketball and More

"I got by on talent. That was my fatal mistake." - Pete Maravich
Most public schools in Tampa do not have a Freshman Team, where a young athlete can begin to acquire the basic basketball skills (shooting, footwork, ball handling, passing) and better know-ledge of the game. All this needs to be done before your young man steps onto a high school campus.  If this is not the case, he runs the risk and disappointment of not making the team.
You might say this is not fair: My son/daughter played on the middle school team. That may be true, but what else did they do?  How many hours per day they practice on their own?  Diligent basketball training starts at four hours per day with Sunday off to rest. (In Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, he states that it takes about 10,000 hours to master your craft.)
In some cases an athlete initially gets by with just his God-given ability. But eventually he will reach a level where everyone is as skilled. Diligent practice with a purpose will allow a player to master the craft.
Where your athlete goes from here is up to him, but if continued basketball involvement is part of it, he should have a plan in place.  If his goal is to make the local varsity team, he needs to have some sense of urgency. This urgency should be focused on learning how to play basketball and mastering the fundamentals of the game at a young age.  Seek instruction and practice! Have fun, but master the skills at the same time.

A One Month Season

A One Month Season

"The more I practice, the luckier I get." - Arnold Palmer
Middle school basketball in Tampa has a ONE month season – with perhaps 25 players out for the team. How do you practice basketball skills?  When do you practice and how long?  How do divide equal playing time between 25 kids?  Seems like a nightmare.  My hat goes off to all of the of the middle school coaches handling this challenge.
One month for grass-roots basketball is terribly insufficient and ends up hurting our kids. As one coach told me: “Right when the kids are catching on, the season is over. On top of that some barely got to play and now may not pick up a ball until next season.  We have to break the cycle!” So, to you parents, one answer is:  Get your youngster on a travel team and he WILL get game experience. (And Tampa has a tournament going on at least once a week.)

3 Things You Don't Know about Tampa Basketball

The Last Fiddle
For the most part, basketball in the Tampa area is stuck in the mud. Other sports like football, volleyball and baseball dominate as the sport of preference. For basketball enthusiasts it may seem like a bad dream, but when you wake up things are still the same way. (And let's not forget to put Facebook and Twitter in the mix of things that basketball competes against.)
This consist of basketball being the last fiddle, one month for middle school, and what level your athlete needs to be at. Why is this the case?  Is this the case in your city?
It should be easy to get a basketball game started; two players, a hoop, and a basketball are all you need. Compare that to other sports that require a specialized field and teams of nine or eleven players!  You can’t play a serious One-on-One game of football or baseball.
Many times I drove by the local park and saw the basketball court empty.  This includes the courts that have lights on at night.  However, if you drive by Skyway Park you will find a packed house.  Why is this a reality? I thought all sports were created equal.

Really! My Socks?

The present day basketball player is famous for judging your game based on the type of socks that you wear.  Last month at one of my basketball skills camps, I found myself in a conversation about the different basketball socks: quarter socks that you can find at Wal-Mart and  Nike Elite long socks that can be found at stores like Champs & Finish Line.

Call me old school or whatever, but I have a ton of quarter socks because of the two C's. What are the two C’s, cost and comfort.  I don't own a single pair of Nike Elite socks. By the way these socks only run about $12 to $15 dollars for 1 pair.  I guess I am not hip to the socks game.
One of my players comes over and tells me this:  "You know that most people who come to the gym, think that people who wear quarter socks have no game and are GARBAGE!"

3 mistakes that basketball players make:
1.       They underestimate and overestimate the competition
2.       They underestimate and overestimate their own ability
3.       They don’t have a GO-TO move

So really; my socks and not the hours I train on my shooting and ball handling determine my game? Money, is it the SHOES? No Mars!  Michael Jordan and Mars Blackmon had that conversation years ago.  My question is this: Is it the SOCKS?  Do the type of socks and shoes I wear really make me a better basketball player?

This non-Basketball IQ thought process is a mistake.  It’s a mistake for you to think that you are the only player working on your game.  It’s a mistake to believe that appearance equals the quality of someone’s game.  Pre-judging a ball player could cost you the game if you are not careful.  By the way, Jordan use to wear short socks.  LOL!

Back Court Takeaways
Walk up to a new court looking like Uncle Drew so people underestimate you.  Never judge a ball player by the type of socks he wears, you could find yourself sitting on the sideline.

LOCAL GUY MAKES GOOD !

LOCAL GUY MAKES GOOD !

BCB Academy alumni Caleb Martin signs with Georgia Highlands

It’s an honor to see Caleb continuing his journey at Georgia Highlands College.  Over the last three years we have seen Caleb develop confidence in himself and leadership on the court. Hard work, determination, and passion have allowed this student athlete to reach his goals.
During the recent Bright House Holiday Tournament Caleb was credited with 11 points and 10 rebounds in his team’s victory over Boca Ciega.  During the game against Riverview high school Caleb racked up 15 points for another win.
The coaching staff at BCB Academy knows that Caleb is a ready for a new set of challenges at Georgia Highlands. With his shooting touch, knowledge of the game, leadership and versatility, we know he will succeed.
